Sew Alluring: How It All Began

February 11th, 2012 at 7:30 pm . Posted in Thoughts on Sewing .

I’ve always admired my mom’s ability to sew, and recently decided to learn the art of sewing myself. As the first post on Sew Alluring, this offers a window into how it all began and why this blog came to be…

As I was growing up, my mom had (and still has) what we refer to as “fabulous sewing skills” — skills that I have long appreciated, though in a way, they completely enabled me. She slipcovered an antique wing chair in my bedroom not once, but twice. She sewed valences, pillows — even a shower curtain — that fit my changing tastes and my sister’s as our styles transitioned from young to pre-teen to teen, and she was always the go-to person for hemming pants and skirts. She actually adjusted my entire senior-year high school prom dress down a size. Needless to say, I’m eternally grateful (thank you, mom!), but now that I’m a little older, I feel bad taking all my sewing projects — and yes, I have to ton of them — to my poor mother.

After she agreed to reupholster my sofas as a wedding present (not that the wedding wasn’t more than enough!) I knew I needed to learn to sew myself. It just isn’t fair to keep bringing her jeans that need three inches gone and furniture that has potential but needs a major facelift. And that’s where Sew Alluring comes in. I’ve decided to take on learning to sew, and plan to document my triumphs and errors in a blog for all the world to see.

I hope you enjoy the stories and maybe even start to find the art of sewing oh-so alluring yourself. Cheers!
